Rudolph Reindeer Amigurumi
It’s my favorite time of year again, and since I already made a Santa monkey amigurumi last year I knew I just had to give him a friend to help spread the holiday cheer, and who better to help than a Rudolph reindeer amigurumi!!

The idea of a Rudolph reindeer amigurumi actually came from a co-worker of mine, and after she suggested it I thought, “Why didn’t I think of that??” I guess I’ve been avoiding making any animals like deer, horses, or cows, because they have long, slender snouts that I could never replicate. But then I just decided to give it a try this year, and it came out much better than I expected! Although, I must admit, halfway through making this Rudolph reindeer amigurumi I was seriously doubting how well it would turn out, especially the face. Luckily, just felt with a red sparkly felted nose was enough to take the place of a slender snout. I kind of like the cartoony look it achieved!
You know what else saved the Rudolph reindeer amigurumi from being another addition to my Pile of Failures? The antlers…! !

Notice how the antlers kind of arch a little bit? There’s actually no wire or anything inside the antlers, it was just molded into that shape from the outside by the sewing genius. I would never have thought of molding it into that shape, but somehow once it takes on that arch it just looks more like an actual reindeer.

And the ears on the reindeer are actually the same exact shape as my Chinese dragon amigurumi. I noticed that my dragon without the whiskers and spiky mane would look a lot like a deer, so I just based this reindeer off of that pattern. My motto for creating patterns is stick with what you know best…because it’s so much less work in the end haha! I think the real secret is I’m incredibly lazy…

And of course we can’t ignore all those fancy embellishments on this Rudolph reindeer amigurumi. Did you notice the bells on his collar? I sewed each and every one of those seven bells onto the collar that I crocheted. It took a long time, and believe me, I am not a good sewer so it was tough for me. But it’s ok, it was totally worth it! The seven bells on its collar give it extra jingle! You could probably use the Rudolph reindeer amigurumi as a tambourine if you wanted to for that extra “umph” in your Christmas caroling! Haha jk, if you did that, its head might fall off and you’d have stuffing all over the place…which might look like snow too…ok I’m just being weird now, I’ll stop haha.

The holly leaves were also cut out by my laser-precise felt-cutting sister. She cut them out without even having to trace anything! I couldn’t even draw holly leaves correctly on paper if someone told me to. I don’t know how she knows these random things and can translate them into an actual cut-out. Alas, my brain is not formatted for art. I was always the least artsy of my siblings. I think my artwork was only chosen twice in my elementary school career, whereas my brother and sister were chosen yearly and were the art teachers’ pets. I felt like such a failure then…I’m so glad I found amigurumi hahaha.

Did you notice the really cool-looking Christmas tree behind the Ruoldph reindeer amigurumi? That was actually a present from my future sister-in-law. She went through great lengths in Taiwan to buy them and lug them around in a crowded train in order to give them to us as Christmas presents last year. So glad she did, because that tree is awesome! The light inside fades away and changes into beautiful shades of color, and the white-ness and sharp edges really give it a clean look. It came as a paper cutout that you have to assemble yourself. A very fun process and worthwhile end product!
