I still cringe everytime I see myself referred to as a “designer” in the pattern. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not cringing out of disgust or anything. It’s more like a surprising cringe, like do I really qualify as a “designer?” Me, really?? Nah, “designer” is the last word I would use to describe myself…

Much to my sister’s chagrin, they also changed the descriptive story of Polar Lucibear to a much milder version of her original story. Polar Lucibear actually had a prop, which was a ring seal plushy made of felt. We forgot to send it in along with the bear when we mailed it. I wonder what they would have done if we had permanently attached the ring seal carcass to the bear haha! Enjoy!

Just caught wind of this very cute and very accurate version of my free dolphin amigurumi pattern. This one is from Twitter user bella2five and is posing quite nicely on a starfish! I love seeing others’ creations and I love showcasing them on my site (with permission of course–which was granted–thank you bella)!

On another note, my dolphin amigurumi pattern is now available on Amazon.com for Kindle users. I originally released it hoping to make it free but Amazon won’t let me set the price lower than $0.99. Anyways, consider it the price of convenience having it available on your Kindle wherever you go.

For those who have already tried out my pattern, I’d love to get your review of it on my Amazon page, even if you didn’t buy it. It would really help me out as I am trying my luck with my patterns there.

Since the first time I posted about my monkey amigurumis, I have received lots of positive feedback and interest in getting a pattern for them. Not knowing so many people would take interest in my monkeys, I actually submitted my pattern for them in Interweave’s 2012 Crochet Me Amigurumi Calendar Contest, and surprisingly got chosen to be a part of the calendar! I received my complimentary copy of the calendar in the mail about a month ago, and have been waiting since then for them to publish the ebook which contains all the patterns for the amigurumis in the calendar. (If you want to buy either the calendar or the ebook, be sure to use coupon code WEAVE15 at checkout to get 15% off your entire order). They finally have, so I’m posting about it now to spread the good news!

Here are some pictures of the calendar I took myself:

I also submitted a pattern for a polar bear my sister fondly nicknamed Polar Lucibear, and it got chosen for the month of December too! Never had the chance to take nice pictures of it before I had to send it in for the contest, but oh well, the professionals did a good job anyway!

The story behind R2D2:

My brother’s birthday was coming up, and I needed to give him something. Buying presents for him was always a challenge, especially since I am still a poor grad student and he’s already working. It just so happened I started crocheting as a hobby, and decided making him something meaningful would be nicer than buying him something lame and cheap.

I knew he liked star wars a lot, so I started thinking of all the star wars characters I could make out of yarn. I surfed the web for star wars patterns, came across a lot of yodas and ewoks and other characters, and was blown away by their cuteness. I thought Artoo would definitely be cute since he’s a robot and no one would expect a robot to be made of yarn! Started searching for the pattern, and unfortunately, didn’t find any. So I was determined to make my own!

Of course, I needed some help. I had only started crocheting 2 months ago and still didn’t know how to sew limbs onto amigurumis very well. So I consulted my little sister, who is much better at sewing and cutting and being extra neat, to help me out. After much trial and error in getting the right proportions, and painstakingly cutting out laser-precise felt pieces, Artoo was finished.

But, before we actually gave it to my brother, we were adding some finishing touches, and he happened to catch a glimpse of it before I could smoothly hide it away! He immediately identified it as Artoo with his eagle eye for anything Star Wars, and our surprise was spoiled, but he was still happy to have him finally on his birthday. He blogged about Artoo on coderetard.com, others blogged about it, and eventually Artoo made his way to the Official Star Wars Blog. It was truly an honor.

So, what started out simply as a birthday present for my star wars fan brother has become something I never would have imagined could happen. To have so many people see Artoo and enjoy him is very meaningful to me. Many thanks for everyone’s feedback and comments!
