Hello and Happy Halloween!! Sorry for the super long hiatus – trust me, I’ve missed amiguruming and blogging just as much as you have all missed seeing my creations and posts. Right, everyone???…..*chirp, chirp*…..yeah, that’s what I expected…I’m sorry. :(

Nonetheless, I recently had a major itch to crochet again! And since Halloween was coming up, I decided it had to be related to Halloween somehow. And that’s how I came up with the idea of doing an amigurumi of a bat, but not just any bat! It had to be a “cute” one. Kinda like how people make owls look really cute, I tried to make bats look cute. Here are what I came up with!

I think the key to making bats look cute, is in the ears. They have to have huuuge floppy ears. So that’s what I tried to achieve. At first, I crocheted a 3-D cone shape and tried to pinch it and place it as ears, but this ended up being way too thick, and bats definitely don’t have thick ears. If anything, they’re paper thin. So I decided to crochet it with one layer, and that turned out much better. I also realized I could use these same ears for other creatures, like a French bulldog!! I know, totally random and unrelated to bats, but please stay tuned for that one! :D

Another key thing to making bats cute is the wings. I wanted to be more creative and cutesy. I was inspired by how owls are made really cutesy when they’re decorated with polka dots or hearts, and adorned with vivid colors. Why not apply the same concept to bats? They’re also nocturnal birds….no they’re not, they’re mammals…of the order Chiroptera to be exact, whose forelimbs form webbed wings, making them the only mammals naturally capable of true and sustained flight (Wikipedia 2015). Wow I totally learned something new today, even in my old age, I’m so proud of myself.

And of course, to top it all off and make things really cutesy, we can’t forget the blush on their cheeks, which I like to call “cheekies”!!

I started experimenting with all sorts of patterned felts for the wings, and different combinations of colors too. For the black bat, I even went with safety eyes that are dual colored. The possibilities are endless! I’m even thinking about cutting out floral print cloth for the wing, and then gluing that onto regular felt for more shape and support. This will make the wings look super cute and sturdy!

When most people think “bat” I’m sure they have the typical image of bats in their minds. The ones with vampire fangs sticking out, and their mouth gaping open ready to pierce your neck and suck your blood! But who says bats can’t be cute and cuddly and romantic??

Aren’t they so cute and cuddly? Someone remarked, “Wow, how did you get the wings to fold down like that for a hug?” I said, “it was really easy, I just folded them down gently and they stuck.” “Wow, such cooperative little bats!” -_-…….

I know it’s Halloween, and people like things dark during this time of year, but hopefully some brightness and cuteness will be a breath of fresh air among all the scare! I totally didn’t mean to rhyme that btw…

Halloween Vampire Monkey Amigurumi

To finish off our crazy Halloween amigurumi spree, we present to you a Vampire Monkey Amigurumi!

Isn’t he so dashing? Looking so sharp with a tux instead of the usual heart chest piece, sparkly black buttons, and a nice little bow tie too. So fashion forward! He even holds a romantic red rose in his paw, handcrafted by my sister polarbear of course. This little vampire monkey amigurumi is sure to charm his way into all the lady’s hearts! Don’t get too excited though ladies…rumor has it he’s dating the little Witch Monkey Amigurumi. Sigh, she’s a lucky monkey, I know…

This vampire monkey amigurumi was by far the fanciest monkey we’ve made so far. The cape was actually handsewn together by my mom (because we all know how horrible I am at sewing). It was such a nice coincidence that we had the perfect materials lying around too, like velvet and satin, to make the perfect cape. The hat is exactly the same as the St Patrick’s Day monkey amigurumi and Fourth of July monkey amigurumi.

Another part of this vampire monkey amigurumi that took a lot of work was the backdrop. Polarbear spent days painting and drawing the background. She even cut up some of the same black chiffon material used for the Witch monkey amigurumi’s cape to make into curtains. Our idea was to make the vampire monkey amiguurmi look like he was in a mansion. For me at least, when I think vampire I think mansion…and of course a coffin!

Polarbear also spent a lot of time handcrafting all the roses on the coffin and on the floor. She even used glitter glue to outline some nice gold lines on the coffin. Very decadent-looking, just how I had envisioned it ahh. The coffin was actually made out of styrofoam from an old egg carton. It was painted black and then nicely decorated. And for you nitpickers out there, yes we are aware the coffin is a little bit small. He sleeps sideways…because he likes to!

Of course, no vampire is complete without some bloody fangs! The fangs were cut out from white felt, then painted very meticulously with red nail polish.

That wraps up our monkeys of the month for October! I hope you’ve all enjoyed our Halloween monkey amigurumis as much as we’ve enjoyed creating them. We went a little crazy because it’s polarbear’s favorite time of the year. She’s been dying to get dark and spooky with our cute amigurumis since forever! I just enjoyed living vicariously through the monkey amigurumis because I want to dress up for Halloween but can’t…sniff sniff.

Halloween Mummy Monkey Amigurumi

I spent a long time on this mummy monkey amigurumi. I pretty much had free rein over what to do with this particular monkey amigurumi so I went crazy with it!

The one thing that took up most of my time was the one eyeball. It took me an entire day just to paint it like that. First I had to paint the entire eye red, then yellow, red again, yellow, and then finally the black pupil. That’s not the end of it though! I still had to wait for all the layers of paint to dry and then I could finally go over all of it with clear nail polish to give it that shiny, glossy finish.

Wrapping this monkey also took a long time. I was cleaning out my sink cabinet one day and found this plain white t-shirt and thought, “hey, I could use this!” So I cut up the entire thing into one very long strip and wrapped it all around the monkey. I got really lazy so instead of cutting the strip into shorter ones, I just used the same long strip to wrap the entire monkey. I only glued a few spots and somehow they stayed! Yay.

At first, this mummy monkey amigurumi was all white and had no red bloody spots on it. It just didn’t look scary enough somehow so I couldn’t help myself any longer and just splotched it all over with red paint. But even then, I still don’t think it’s scary enough… But I’m still satisfied with the end product!

Halloween Devil Monkey Amigurumi

Anyone want to see a cute Halloween devil monkey amigurumi? Here it is! Our cute version of the devil. >]

Did you know the devil could look so cute and harmless? Don’t you just want to pinch his pink little cheekies? Yes, he’d like that.

To make it look more devilish, we included the little black horns at the top of its head. And then to top it off, we just cut out some black wings using a thin black foam sheet.

The only problem with this devil monkey amigurumi was that our image of it was completely different. Janama wanted it to look cute, but I wanted it to look evil…..and maybe cute? At any rate, I couldn’t help myself and just cut out the wings so that they’d fit my image of the devil. Sharp, pointed and fancy! I figured that since the monkey’s face was cute already, I could probably get away with the wings that no one will probably pay much attention to. Hehe..

The felt face and chest pieces are a dark red color. If you think about it, isn’t the devil all red? We could have done white felt, but then it would just end up looking like a Santa Claus monkey… So instead, we just used dark red felt. Does it look devilish enough?

I even tried to be fancy and cut an extra little edge on the upper tips of the wings. Did you see them? If you did notice them…yay.

My black flowers that I bought a long time ago really came in handy here! I really liked how they looked but could never seem to find a place for them. Now they look happy and perfectly at home with our devil monkey amigurumi.
